Melissa: Welcome back to the show everybody. I’m sure like everybody out there, I’ve been counting down the days to Hollywood’s biggest night, Sunday. Ladies and gentleman we are in the home stretch to the Oscars and I cannot wait to curl up with a glass, a bottle of wine and watch the show.
Cynthia: I am so right there with you. But wine of course always taste best when it’s paired with something. This year we’re going to pair our favourite wines with our Oscar picks. Here to show us how is Sommelier and editor of Canada’s largest wine site, Natalie Maclean.
So you are going to breakdown which wines pair best with this year’s Oscar nominees. To start what should we keep on mind when we’re pairing and we’re looking for wine to pair with a specific mood?
Natalie: Right! I’m gonna take my queue from Mel and just buy a lot. No matter what mood, what movie, your well stocked and you can put up those indulgent acceptances speeches.
Jess: Okay Natalie! Come on over here. You’re going to put your knowledge of wine and Oscar nominees to the test. You’ll tell us a little bit about each wine, then we’ll have a choice of three Oscar nominees. We have to guess which actor or movie, you believed, pairs best with each wine.
Natalie: You got it!
Jess: This sounds like fun, so let’s get started with best supporting actor. What do we have here?
Natalie: We have a dry Rosé from Southern France. It’s Miravel Rosé. We’ll going do a little twist here Jess. We’re going to pair it up with best supporting actor, as you mentioned, and let’s just take a look at those nominees first, shall we?

Natalie: Oh! I’m sorry Jess, its Sylvester Stallone! Rόse. Real men do drink pink. That’s okay. You have a come back opportunity with this next one, Jess.
Jess: I love it! Supporting actress so what’s this one about?
Natalie: This is the Beringer Chardonnay. We are, now, in the home state of the Oscars, California, all the way. Let’s look at the nominees for best supporting actress to pair with this wine. Jess, here they are:

Natalie: This is Veuve Cliqout. We’ve the Magnum size for the party and we’ve got the after party size, Mel. We’re going to pair this up with best actress nominees. Let’s take a look at them.

Wow! Look at that. So, Wendy, as you’re tasting, its crisp, its dry but it’s also very celebratory even I would say joyful.

Wendy: Yes! Okay! So we also have a wine here that you are going to pair with another nominee.
Natalie: Exactly! Best actress nominee… It’s a Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc, its crisp and it has defined edges like some of these best actress nominees. Here they are:

Natalie: Oh my gosh! Yes!
Cynthia: Yes!

Natalie: Exactly!
Melissa: So the last category at the Oscars is Best Picture and we are going to end with best picture here as well, what wine are we starting with?
Natalie: Right! A Young Brute from Australia. So we have a…
Melissa: What’s his name?
Natalie: You’re gonna find out. Okay so, we’ve got nominees for best picture and let’s take a look at those first.

Okay, as you’re tasting Mel, think about this wine, it’s made in Australia and perhaps has similarities with the movie. It has some deep, dark brooding … Think about anger issues maybe.
Melissa: Mad Max!
Natalie: Yes! Mad Max. There you go!
Melissa: Okay, that’s nice.
Natalie: Alright!
Melissa: That’s beautiful.
Natalie: And we’re on the last one, Terrazas from Los Andes Argentina, a Malbec, their signature red. We’re going to look at three more nominees for best picture to pair this wine.

That’s great, so as you’re tasting, you’re thinking, its complex, its rich but most importantly is has a nice long finish. Which you say? Three nominees.
Melissa: I like antonyms so I’m gonna go with The Big Short.
