The Wine in Our Stars: Pairing Wine and Your Astrological Sign

On CTV’s Your Morning we had fun chatting about pairing wine with your zodiac sign.

At the beginning of every new year, we often see astrological forecasts for the major events that might happen or the people we’ll meet.

Why pair wine with your astrological sign?

Many of us sneak a peek at astrology columns when it comes to romantic or career possibilities, and each zodiac sign has its own birthstone and flower, and, so why not a signature wine?

Whether or not you believe in astrology, I think it’s a fun way to explore wine.

Suzette, I think we should start with you – what’s your sign?

I’m a Virgo, so tell me what’s in store for me wine-wise?

Virgos, born between August 23 and September 22, are known for their attention to detail, but I’m sure you already knew that Suzette. Also, I’m no fortune teller, but I see many delicious, full-bodied California red wines in your future like these two:

Conundrum 10th Anniversary Red 2019
California, United States

Stave & Steel Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon
California, United States

Given your observant nature, you’ll pick up immediately on how meticulously well-made these are.

Sounds great Natalie! Now I hear you’re a Libra, which is the sign right next to mine so which wine is in your future?

You’re right Suzette, Libras are born between September 23 and October 22. We love balance and harmony so avoid confrontation like the plague. That’s why we’re symbolized by the scales. So my ideal wine is Pinot Noir, like these two, that are so lovely and not too light or full-bodied.

Excellent, now my husband is a Gemini and he says his favourite wine is beer. What do you suggest for him?

Well, there’s hope, Suzette. Geminis, born between May 21 and June 20, are energetic, talkative and social. That may be why sadly he likes beer. But I think we can persuade him to come over to the wine team with these two bubblies from Nova Scotia. The bonus is they pair well with all the foods and snacks that go with beer without the bloat.

Benjamin Bridge Méthode Classique Brut Reserve
Nova Scotia, Canada

Super! What about my co-anchor Lataevia who is a Pisces?

Pisces, represented by two fish swimming in opposite directions, are born between February 19 and March 20. They’re both empathetic and creative. She’ll enjoy this vibrant Sauvignon Blanc, which go swimming well with seafood.

Stoneleigh Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Marlborough, New Zealand

Sea Sun Chardonnay 2018
California, United States

What would you suggest for Amanda who is a Taurus?

Taurus, born April 20 to May 20, is hard-working and determined, which is why the sign’s symbol is the bull. But Taurus is also ruled by the planet Venus and so is a lover of sensual wines like this full-bodied, smooth Chateau Clarke.

Château Clarke 2016
Listrac-Médoc, Bordeaux A.C., France

Our cameraman is Jamie, who’s a Scorpio. What should he be drinking?

Scorpios, born between October 23 and November 21, are intense and like to dig into the reasons behind how things work. Jamie will love a wine that has deep roots like this Chateau Teyssier.

Château Teyssier 2018
Montagne-Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux A.C., France

And finally, our beloved producer, Vicki, is a Sagittarius. What’s in store for her this year?

Sagittarians, born between November 22 and December 21, love to learn and get great satisfaction in discovering new things. Vicki would enjoy these zesty, zippy Gruner Veltliners from Austria.

Lenz Moser Prestige Grüner Veltliner 2018
Niederösterreich, Austria

Rabl Langenlois Grüner Veltliner 2019
Langenlois, Kamptal D.A.C., Austria
