Superb Amontillado that features clementine and tangerine notes on the nose and palate then finishes almost dry with pleasant burnt almond note. Lovely!

Superb sherry at an incredible value. Fresh scents of flor, orange citrus, overripe banana, salted caramel, dried figs, nuts and bread. Medium dry with just enough sweetness. Burnt brown sugar and banana bread flavours remind me of my grandmother’s banana upside down cake. The bottom of the pan is lined with brown sugar, maraschino cherries and pineapple that caramelize in a healthy dose of butter. I taste it all in this glass. There’s a delicious yet fresh finish of orange and crisp celery sticks. Pair with a mildly sweet dessert like shortbread cookies or alfajores. Try it with a smoked meat sandwich on walnut fig bread with some cornichons or sip on its own and enjoy.

Amontillado style wine is my favourite style of "sherry" although this Alvear wine is from the Montilla region of Spain, not Xeres, and is made from the Pedro Ximénez grape varietal. The aromas are a festive blend of toasted nuts, caramel, citrus peel and dried fruit. The flavours are similar but the dried fruit sweetness gives way to a distinct saltiness (salted roasted nuts) on the finish. A perfect match with aged cheeses or charcuterie. Not your grandmother's sherry!

Amontillado, literally means "in the style of Montillo", named after the D.O. in southern Spain where this is made. This medium-dry Amontillado initially ages under a blanket of flor, like a Fino, then loses the flor and continues aging oxidatively. It continues in oak casks for more than 6 years, ending up fuller-bodied than a Fino, with a touch of sweetness. Nutty aromas and flavours, along with dried figs on palate, with a surprisingly dry finish. Serve medium-chilled, 16-18 C, either as an aperitif with nuts and strong cheddar cheese, or alternatively with onion soup or spicy tacos. Makes a wonderful flavour combination of sweet and spicy.

Honey, apricot, baked spiced, dry finish.
Great value at $13! This is so fun without being too sweet or too heavy.
Pair with dessert on sip on its own by a fireplace.

Wonderful, complex, barely off-dry. Burnt orange, honeyed figs, smoke and nuts rolled up in a great umami blanket. Chill a bit and try with mushroom dishes or tapas, meat and charcuterie.

A lovely fortified, Sherry-style wine from Montilla. Beautiful golden amber colour, fuller bodied than Fino style sherry, and sweeter on the palate, although still a bit dry on the finish. Flavours of roasted honey almonds and figs. Lengthy finish. Try with a cheese plate and nuts after dinner or charcuterie.
