Appassimento Wine Tasting – Ontario Wine Society

Interest in producing appassimento-style wines in Ontario is growing rapidly. This grape-drying process, used in Northern Italy to produce famed Amarone wines, is now producing rich and full-bodied wines here in Ontario.

Donald Ziraldo will be our guest speaker, who will share with us his passion for Niagara appassimento-style wines.

Joining us for the tasting portion of the evening will be several of Ontario’s innovative appassimento-style wineries :

Cave Spring Cellars: 2007 “La Penna” Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon

Colaneri Estate Winery: 2009 “Pensiere” Merlot
Reif Estate Winery: 2010 “The Magician” Shiraz/Pinot Noir

You will also have the opportunity to compare these innovative Niagara wines to one of Italy’s popular Amarone wines – the 2007 Masi Costasera Amarone Classico DOC.

Reif Estate Winery will be providing the reception wines – 2010 Pinot Grigio and 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Join us at this unique event and discover why a growing number of Ontario wineries are adapting the traditional Italian Appassimento technique to our cooler climate and delivering wines with beautiful depth, character and intensity.

A plate of appetizers will also be served.
