Another stellar vintage for this single vineyard Carmenere rocks! Carmenere is the flagship red wine of Chile. Loving the layers of fleshy black plums. Lots of concentration and length. Velvet texture on the palate. The wines from San Pedro's 1865 line come from its own vineyard planted with a specific variety. The Carmenere comes from the winery's property in the Maule Valley, with rolling hillside vineyards averaging 20 years of age and planted in alluvial soil with angular stones to control plant vigour. This robust red wine finishes with notes of cassis and dried tobacco. Great balance and depth. Try it with a rack of lamb tonight. Highly recommended.

Carmenere food pairings: venison, ratatouille, rabbit stew, bison steaks.

Reviews and Ratings

Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Another beautiful vintage for the 1865 Carmenère balancing elegance with bold concentrated ripe black fruit. Prominent notes show black plum, clove, violets, cloves, and graphite minerality. A fine full-bodied, thorough-bred, best in show Carmenère with no green veg notes in sight. Enjoy with grilled rib eye. Tasted June 2017 by @sommsosa | bespoketastings.ca
Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

This single vineyard Carmenere from Chile's Maule Valley was made from handpicked grapes from Las Moradas Vineyard, which gets its name from the purple soils there. This full bodied red has an intoxicating nose with plum, ripe blackberry, black cherry, tobacco, dark chocolate, vanilla and black pepper. The rich palate is smooth and well-structured, with lots of ripe dark berries, dark chocolate and white pepper. This wine would pair well with pheasant, partridge, grilled red meats or strong cheeses.

Pamela Chiles rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Chile and Carmenere - like Canada and maple syrup. Carmenere is Chile's grape and they do it fabulously. Ripe berry and plum fruit, spice, leather, smooth and elegant and deeply flavoured. Pair with smoked, dry-rubbed baby back ribs from a small, local pork producer.
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Another lovely example of Carmenere. Compared to the 2014 vintage, the 2015 shows a bit more ripe red fruit on the palate. Still some spicy and peppery notes adding nice depth of flavours. Medium tannins and a medium finish. Enjoy with beef or game meats.
Lynn van der Linde - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Carmenère grape needs a very warm region to see its potential, as it requires an extended ripening time to balance its naturally acidic characteristic. This 2015 vintage had a consistently warm and long ripening period, and displays typical, slightly austere characteristics that Carmenère has to offer.

Dark ruby in the glass, spicy aromas up front transform to a rich dark fruit berry flavor, with balanced acidity and tannin, and a spicy finish.
Perfect wine for barbecued fare. 90 pts.
