Sea Sun 2019 Pinot Noir is produced by Charlie Wagner from wine grapes sourced from California's cool-climate coastal vineyards The Wagners come from a long line of Napa Valley wine grape growers and winemakers dating back to the 1850s. They're also the family who produce the coveted Caymus wines. Look for ripe cherry, plum, red berry compote, vanilla, flinty and toasty oak spice flavours vibrant on the palate. Tannins are fine-grained, giving a silky mouth-feel. Drink or hold.

Pinot Noir food pairings: grilled bavette steak, wild mushroom bisque, roast duck, veal Porterhouse.

Reviews and Ratings

Christian Marcoux rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

The Sea Sun 2019 is rich in flavor and dark in color for a Pinot Noir. This sipper offers aromas of plum sauce, dark cherry, red licorice, truffle, brown sugar, allspice and cedar. Harvested in Monterey County, Solano County and San Luis Obispo County, this full-bodied Pinot delivers a warm finish, and soft tannins and acidity. Flavors of ripe dark cherry, strawberry jam, potpourri, cocoa, cinnamon and brown sugar. Enjoy.
Lori Kilmartin WSET3 - WSET3 Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

The Wagner family have been making top quality wines in California since the 1850's. Their Sea Sun line is comprised of a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - two popular grapes that are sourced from various vineyards over several hundred miles.

This Pinot hails from vineyards in Monterey, Solano and San Luis Obispo. Aromas of beet, rhubarb, ripe cherry and oak with earthy undertones. Very fruit forward on the palate with flavours of ripe black cherry and spice. Medium acidity and soft tannins that balance nicely with all that fruit. Medium/full body with 14.2% alcohol and a medium finish. This wine would pair well with roast pork and chicken dishes. Tasted March 22/2022
Melanie Lloyd - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Aromas of black cherry, ripe strawberry, violet, potting soil, decomposing leaves, brown sugar, dried eucalyptus, and hints of milk chocolate.

Medium bodied on the palate with tart plum notes, smooth tannins, ripe strawberry, and hints of mocha at the finish. Nicely balanced.

Pairing: I had this with tomato-basil cheese crisps, and yum! Good combo. Roast beef would pair nicely. I also tried Espresso Bellavitano cheese with this wine. A perfect pairing is when the wine compliments the food, and the food compliments tbe wine. In this case, the cheese took a little away from the wine, but the wine improved the cheese flavours and it was delicious, so I would recommend this pairing.

Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

This wine is warm and comforting on a cold winter's night. Aromas of blueberry, blackberry and cherry, with lots of smoky undertones. Medium+ bodied with soft tannins and mouthwatering acidity on the palate, the berry notes are rich and ripened, trending to jammy, but with enough acidity to prevent it from being overwhelming. a bit of heat on the finish from the 14.2% alcohol, although it maybe feels a little hotter. Enjoy this with slow braised meats, or any grilled meats with a sweeter glaze or sauce.
Andrea Shapiro rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

From the Wagner Family of Wines in California, Sea Sun Pinot Noir is vibrant and plummy with a bevy of cherry, smoke and sweet spice. Medium bodied with bold acidity, silky tannins and mouthwatering baked cherry and blueberry fruit on the finish. A suitable pairing with honeyed ham, pork roast or glazed salmon. Enjoy! - tasted November 2021
Lynn van der Linde - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

A bold Pinot Noir made from a blend of grapes across a few wine counties in Southern California. Enticing aromas of black cherries, vanilla and dried herbs, with a fruit forward blackberry flavour. Medium+ body, made persistent by a slightly higher alcohol level at 14%+ abv.
Pair with root vegetable dishes or roasted meats.
Tasted Dec 2021.
Craig Haynes - WSET3 FWS SWS IWS rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

The 2019 Sea Sun Vineyard Pinot Noir showcases a full bodied, fruit focussed expression of this varietal. Its aroma + flavour profile highlights ripe red berries and subtle sweet spices from start to finish. How does it feel? This Cali pinot is pleasingly dry and creamy with gentle pulling tannins and touches of food friendly acidity. I think this creation will match well a bowl of hearty stew and today’s close to zero Celsius temperature.

For those interested in where the 2019 Sea Sun’s pinot noir was grown, it is mostly from Monterey County (94%) which borders the Pacific Ocean south of San Fransisco as well as Solano County (3%) and San Luis Obispo County (3%).

Pamela Chiles rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

A fruity, soft-textured Pinot made from fruit sourced from coastal regions - I would expect a bit more acidity, but this wine is pleasant enough at this price point. The nice, savoury background beetroot and earthy notes balance out the baked/jammy cherry character and the silky tannins make this wine a decent sipper. Try with grilled eggplant or lamb chops.
Tasted March 2022
From Charlie Wagner, Sea Sun 2019 Pinot Noir is fragrant with cherry jam and vanilla aromas; dry, spicy and crisp on with baked cherry pie, ripe red berry and earthy, spicy notes silky on the palate. Lightly chill and pour with roast duck or chicken. Grapes for this vintage were sourced from California's cool-climate coastal vineyards. - Community Wine Reviews
Sea Sun celebrates our ongoing exploration of California and its great diversity of land. Our Pinot Noir is sourced from premier coastal regions, with cooling breezes off the Pacific Ocean that balance the bright warmth of the sun. These ideal conditions allow for an extended growing season, enabling us to create a layered wine that holds broad appeal. Strikingly soft, with scents of baked cherries, vanilla and brown spice. - Wagner Family of Wine
