New Zealand's climate is similar to that of Alsace in France, so it's not surprising that this Pinot Gris has Alsatian leanings in its steely dryness and focus. This is an off-dry style yet vibrant acidity keeps it refreshing and food-friendly. Aromas of white pear and golden apple. Rich, mouth-filling texture. Pair with poultry and creamy cheeses.

Reviews and Ratings

Mary Anne van Gaal rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

A smooth Pinot Gris with a little bit of zip! Aromas of pear and honeysuckle. Rich flavours of peach and apple linger in the mouth. Great with creamy cheeses and chicken.
Lynn van der Linde - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

September in a glass! Concentrated aromas of ripe red apples and fresh cut flowers, and a surprisingly full mouth feel. Enough acidity to be enjoyed with softer cheeses, and just when the acidity begins to fade, the flavours of apples and pears continue to persist.
Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Some of my new favourite expressions of Pinot Gris are coming from the Gisborne/Hawkes Bay regions in New Zealand. This Villa Maria PG is quite remarkable. Trpical fruit aromas of honeydew melon, guava and orange blossoms are the most dominant combined with additional layers of fresh honey crisp apple and stone fruit. This wine is medium (+) bodied, off dry with a great balance of acidity and a moderate finish. Pairing this with butter chicken could be phenom!
David Skinner rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

A pale straw appearance. Apple and pear dominate both the nose and palate. Medium acidity and a rich mouthfeel are derived from its slightly off-dry nature. A medium finish and a nice light fruit profile.

Summer salads with a light vinaigrette will match this well or juts grab a glass on its own.
Douglas McMillan rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

Not your everyday boring Pinot Gris, with aromas of lychee, passion fruit, minerality, and white flowers. The taste is primarily pear and apricot, and the acidity is medium-high. Pair with a chicken dish with a bit of spice to it.
Rachelle O'Connor rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

This pinot gris showcases aromas of pear, green apple and floral notes , with a full mouthful of the same, off-dry finish. Grown in the Marlborough, Gisborne, and Hawkes's Bay regions this translates to the peak flavor of the grapes harvested at the perfect time. Delightful with soft cheeses.
Sean O'Regan - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 87/100 with the following review:

The fruit for this wine is sourced from three regions to maintain natural acidity. The nose shows apple, peach, citrus and floral notes along with light spice. Light bodied with a touch of sweetness and lightly spicy on a medium finish. Tasted Sept 2015 at Villa Maria winemaker lunch.
