I had my first Coto de Imaz Reserva from it's 1995 vintage. One of the better QPR Rioja available in Ontario. The aromas of red cherry, rhubarb, earth are so well integrated. Everything is very red in this wine - I don't find any prunes or liqurish flavors. On the palate, so pleasant - everything that was noted on the nose packaged in medium body with flavors of rasberries, mediteranian herbs and hints of chocolate. Mmm good.
Bright red color. Ripe cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complemented by vanillin oak spices and cured tobacco. Fleshy and sweet, offering concentrated cherry preserve and bitter chocolate flavors and picking up dusty tannins on the back end. Turns juicier and spicier on the finish, which strongly echoes the cherry and bitter chocolate notes. I’d give this a few more years of bottle age to mellow out. Score: 89(+?)
