Love this style of old vines Rioja! Old leather, juicy, almost tart cherry, and lots of layered satisfaction with a contemplatively long finish. Mouth-filling, mouth-watering and subtle with some spice on the finish and cigar box. One for the cellar -- if you can wait. This is a blend of traditional Spanish red wine grapes: Tempranillo and Garnacha grown in the Rioja region. The grapes for this wine come from 60-year-old bush vines, and their concentrated but nuanced flavour shows through. Pair with beef-based dishes.

Reviews and Ratings

Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

An exciting blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Viura and Graciano which spent 24 mos in oak. Dark garnet red with an aromatic nose of ripe cherries, vanilla and sweet baking spices/clove. The rich palate shows ripe red berries, clove, leather and vanilla. Harmonious rich mouthfeel and a satisfying ripe cherry finish.
The 2008 vintage of the Finca La Emperatriz Reserva has a smoky weave from having been aged in 70% American oak barrels. This is a red wine blend of 94% Tempranillo, 3% Garnacha, 2% Viura and 1% Graciano grapes. The vineyards for this winery were originally owned by the wife of Napoleon III and she was the last Empress of France. - Community Wine Reviews
