Great value on this rich and big Chilean Carmenère. Mayu 2015 Gran Reserva has ripe blackberry compote and mocha aromas on the nose with liquid dark berries, savoury spice, mocha and dried sweet tobacco leaf flavours on the palate. This is a unique style of Carmenère with bunches of grapes allowed to semi-raisin on the vine because of an extended two-month hang time. Mayu refers to the river of stars in the Milky Way.

Reviews and Ratings

Christian Marcoux rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

Open since 2005, Mayu winery, located in the Elqui Valley of Chile, delivers excellent quality for a young winery. Mayu winery is proud to offer premium quality wine and the 2015 Mayu Gran Reserva is one of them. Made from 100% Carmenere, this wine will garnish your glass with aromas of mission fig, black plum, white pepper, slate, caramel and sandalwood. Full-bodied with a long and warm finish, the Mayu will surprise you with its opulent black fruit and alcohol. Flavors of ripe plum, raspberry jam, graphite, coffee, vanilla, caramel and sweet tobacco. Enjoy.
From the Elquí Valley Wine Region Mayu 2015 is a Gran Reserva juicy Carmenère. Grapes are left to hang and extra two months on the vine and lose about 35% of their moisture, become concentrated almost replicating the Amarone process, but on the vine. Smoky on the nose with layers of dark fruit, tobacco leave and mocha flavours on the palate. At 15% abv, needs a big, juicy grilled steak. "Mayu" refers to the river of stars in the Milky Way. - Community Wine Reviews
