Savoury, feral, rich, dark and brooding South African red wine made from classic Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. The grapes were harvested by hand in mid April and underwent a cold maceration of 5 days followed by a longer one of 25 days. The wine was aged in French oak barrels (95%) and America oak (5%). Intense concentration and depth of flavour: lots of fleshy black plums and berries. Pair with leg of lamb and rosemary.

Cabernet Sauvignon food pairings: roast leg of lamb, grilled venison steak, bison burgers.

Reviews and Ratings

Tania Thomas - CSW, WSET ADV rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

The Vintage of 2014 in Maipo produced fruit of superb quality, although much smaller in quantity, which provided for a greater concentration of flavours and added complexity. This Maipo Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a “pretty boy of 1865” as the winemaker jokingly put it. With soft, velvety tannins, it offers the best expression of Chilean New World style. Intense aromas and flavours of ripe red cherries, raspberries and plums. A hint of smoke on a long, lingering finish. Perfect pairing with roasted and grilled meats. Tasted June 2017. Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

This award-winning Cab Sauv is hand-harvested and crafted in Chile's Maipo Valley, which is home to Chile's best terroirs. The weather in 2014 resulted in a smaller harvest but with more concentration in the grapes and better overall quality of the wine. Wine Spectator placed this Cab #59 in their Top 100 Wines. Intensely fragrant, showing ripe strawberries, plums, slight mint and spices. The concentrated palate is lush with red berries, plums, mint, spice and herbs in a smooth, seductive mouthfeel with soft tannins. Elegant, lingering finish with berry and mint. The winemaker calls it the "pretty boy from Maipo", i.e., easy to like and hard to forget!
Pair with veal or beef empanadas. Look for it at the LCBO in Sept. 2017

Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This wine has been recognized by Wine Spectator as #59 on their top 100 wines of 2016, and it is easy to see why. Nice concentration of red plum raspberry, and cherry, complemented with a subtle touch of smokiness from oak aging, 95% French, and only half in new barrels. Smooth tannins and a lingering finish. Overall very balanced, enjoyable and perfect for your next steak dinner. (June 2017)
Andrew Bernardo rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This wine has that classic Chilean "Cab Funk", along with black fruit, fruit pit, menthol, coffee, forest floor and crushed dried flowers. Lovely wine. 90 Points.
San Pedro 1865 Selected Vineyards 2017 is a savoury, classic wild and robust Cabernet Sauvignon from the Maipo Valley wine region. Grapes were harvested by hand in mid-April and underwent a cold maceration of 5 days followed by a longer one of 25 days. The wine was aged in French oak barrels (95%) and America oak (5%). Look for ripe black fruit, earthy florals, espresso, underbrush, minty herb flavours on the palate. - Community Wine Reviews
