The 2018 Red is aged in whisky barrels, imparting a seductive smokey character. Pair this full-bodied red with seared meats in rich red wine reductions; roasted leg of lamb; mushroom stews and of course Hockey Night in Canada.

Food pairings: grilled steak, veal cutlets, lamb chops.

Reviews and Ratings

Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Plush and full bodied red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Aromas of black plum, cedar, mint, and smoke. Full bodied and smooth on the palate, with a richness coming from the whisky barrel aging. Fruit flavours are ripe and plush, and there are some smoky, spicy notes on the finish. Enjoy this with marinated flank steak.
Andrea Shapiro rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

From Wayne Gretzky Estates, this is a Cabernet-Merlot blended red wine that has been aged in the estate's own whisky cask barrels. On the nose the bouquet opens up with a multitude of aromas; dark cherries, blackberries and smoky toasty oak. Flavours reveal dried strawberries, dark bramble berries and a touch of chili infused cocoa at the back. Full bodied with robust, spicy tannins and a dark plummy finish. It’s intricate, complex and multi layered. For an exciting experience, pair this with whisky marinated rib eye steaks, or barbecued roasted ribs with hickory-mesquite infused sauce. Enjoy! - tasted February 2021
Craig Haynes - WSET3 FWS SWS IWS rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Crafted with merlot and cabernet this blend’s enticing bouquet showcased elegant floral, mint, dark berry and bitter dark chocolate aromas that ushered in rich raspberry, blackberry and hints of savoury spice flavours. Medium plus in body with pulling yet welcoming tannins and a pleasing finish.

Before being bottled, this red from Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula appellation spent some time in oak barrels that had matured whisky for the vineyard‘s sibling distillery and has absorbed some of their character, so serve with slow cooked BBQ ribs. Enjoy.

Carolyn Hetke rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

This Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend's claim to fame is the fact that after the traditional oak barrel aging 25% of it went on to further aging in whisky barrels. In addition to the field berries and a touch of cedar on the nose, the slightly hot, sweet added dimension is presumably from the whisky barrel aging. A nice blend of red and black fruit on the palate with fine, chalky tannins. Tasted Nov 22, 2019 www.thewineloverskitchen.com
From the Niagara Peninsula wine region, Wayne Gretzky Cabernet Merlot 2018 is oak aged in whisky barrels giving a rich smoothness, and yes, a whisky-barrel taste to the wine which is quite pleasant. Matured in conventional French and American oak barrel, 25% the blend is aged in the estate's Red Cask whisky barrel. Dry, full-bodied, fruit forward dark plum, berry, smoky cherry, and baking spice flavours on the palate. Pair with rich meat dishes. - Community Wine Reviews
