Casas del Bosque Gran Reserva Pinot Noir 2013, Casablanca Valley, Chile: A rich, luxurious Chilean Pinot Noir with aromas of dark plum and spice. The 2013 vintage was the coldest one on record for the Casablanca region in 120 years. Contrary to what you might expect, the alcohol level in this wine is 14.7%, usually the result of a warm vintage. However, in cool vintages, Grant Phelps, the winemaker, waits for full physiological ripening in the grapes and as a result, grape sugars build with longer hang time and convert at higher levels of alcohol. That said, this wine has great freshness and there's not a hint of alcoholic warmth. Pair with grilled lamb. Pinot Noir food pairings: truffle risotto, planked salmon. Drink: 2016 - 2021 525022 14% XD 750 mL $22.00 Score: 93/100. August 2016. Top Rated Red Wine Full Review Add to Shopping Cart

Casas del Bosque Pequenas Producciones Syrah 2014, Casablanca Valley, Chile: A superb Chilean Syrah with great textural richness on the palate. The grapes for this wine enjoyed a long Indian summer during the fall harvest and as a result ripened to great depth and concentration of flavour. Aromas of black plum and spice. This is an elegant coastal cool-climate Syrah made from grapes that grow on 11-year-old vines planted on well-drained hillsides. Pair with rack of lamb. Drink: 2015 - 2021 13.7% D 750 mL $22.00 Score: 94/100. August 2016. Top Rated Red Wine Full Review Add to Shopping Cart

Casas del Bosque Pequenas Producciones Syrah 2013, Casablanca Valley, Chile: This superb Chilean Syrah comes from the cool 2013 vintage: the grapes weren't picked until May in order to get full phenolic ripening. This wine benefits from using barrels that were convection toasted: toasting was even, at a medium toast, rather than the blistering that happens with regular toasting methods. There's a terrific spicy character but none of the the buttery or coconut notes. About 40% of the barrels are made in Cognac and 60% in Chile using French oak. Pair with pork chops. Drink: 2015 - 2021 13.7% D 750 mL $22.00 Score: 92/100. August 2016. Top Rated Red Wine Full Review Add to Shopping Cart

Casas del Bosque Pequenas Producciones Syrah 2012, Casablanca Valley, Chile: This voluptuous Chilean Syrah hails from the strong 2012 vintage. Winemaker Grant Phelps allows the grapes to dry natural in perforated cases in the vineyard a day then leaves the grapes on their skins for 16 days for a rich, long maceration to soak up the wickedly deep colour and flavour. Surprisingly, the wine ferments to complete dryness in just 1 day. It's lush and has the textural richness of a warm climate even though the Casablanca region is a decidedly cool climate. Pair with lamb shank. Drink: 2014 - 2020 13.7% D 750 mL $22.00 Score: 93/100. August 2016. Top Rated Red Wine Full Review Add to Shopping Cart

Maison Louis Jadot Volnay Premier Cru Clos Barre 2009, Côte De Beaune, Burgundy Aoc, France: Founded in 1859, the house of Louis Jadot has been making wine in Burgundy for generations. This is a mature Burgundian Pinot Noir now displaying attractive tertiary aromas such as wild violets and truffle, along with black cherry and spice. Pair with veal chops. Drink: 2012 - 2022 977074 14% D 750 mL $99.00 Score: 92/100. August 2016. Top Rated Red Wine Full Review Add to Shopping Cart

Cafe Culture Pinotage 2015, Western Cape, South Africa: Very, very coffee, espresso and mocha from the nose to the finish. You'll adore and abhor this style, but you need to try it at least once. Pinotage made in the coffee style has become a cult favourite. This isn't sweet but it beats coffee spiked with anything and has lower alcohol when compared to Bailey's etc. Pair with coffee-rubbed meats. Pinotage food pairings: coffee-rubbed steak or pork. Drink: 2015 - 2017 292466 14% XD 750 mL $12.95 Score: 88/100. August 2016. Best Value Red Wine Full Review Add to Shopping Cart
