Le Grand Vin

Osoyoos Larose Le Grand Vin Meritage 2008

Beverly scored this wine: 97/100

On colour, it holds a deep ruby red hue, and so much so that one of our dinner guests called the wine 'opaque'. On the nose, definite spice and currant elements are picked up, along with plum preserve and vanilla scents. On the palate, you'll find this to be a smooth wine with fabulously tempered tannins, pomegranate and blackberry that ends with a buttery taste amongst a medium to long finish. All of our dinner guests, regardless of wine preferences, enjoyed this wine for its smoothness even just after being opened. A true crowd pleaser!

Beverly scored this wine: 94/100

Being created in Valpantena, the only cru denomination in the Valpolicella area, I expected to be wowed by Bertani’s Amarone, and I was. On colour, this Amarone holds a deep, full, ruby red hue, with sensational edges. On the nose, the aromatic intensity is energetic and held scents reminiscent of smokiness, spice and chocolate. On the palate, you are wowed with the full mouth feel of this wine and its refined tannins, robust fruitiness, and spicy undertones. Each sip of this Bertani Amarone is a reminder of its superior vinification and elegance. If you are interested in introducing your palate to the world of Amarone, for the first time, Bertani Villa Arvedi Amarone Della Valpolicella, 2008, is a fantastic choice.

Quails' Gate Estate Winery Chardonnay 2011

On colour, this Chardonnay holds a pale straw hue, and it isn’t until you nose this beauty that you start to get a sense of what you are in store for. The scents alone are enough to make your mouth water as it is filled with smells of green apple, citrus, some spice and light oak. On the palate, you are met with tastes of melon, honey, with a creamy, buttery long finish. One of the things that also made this wine stand out for us on the palate is that though the fermentation process included some barrelling (50% tank, 50% barrel), the oak elements were lightly present and not overbearing, allowing all of the wines elements to be noticed and appreciated.

On colour, the Rolly Gassmann Riesling 2009 holds a crisp, yet light, golden wheat hue. On the nose, scents of green apple, pear and definite melon are noted, with a light floral essence. On the palate, this wine sits perfectly in the desired state of being well tempered with acidity, finely managing the wine’s sweetness. You’ll also note tastes of that persistent melon, apricot, and pear. Lastly, this wine produces an enjoyable medium length finish. This is a formidable white!!

Abbona

On colour, you’ll note a dark ruby red hue that actually borders on garnet. On the nose, there are definite wisps of plum, spice and some smokiness. On the palate, [sigh] it is smoothly received. You’ll note tastes of plum, cherry, light herbaceousness, and refined tannins, all brought to you with a medium to long finish.
