This classic Chilean red wine is savoury, dark and complex with a chewy, full-bodied mid-palate. Layers of black fruit with a long finish. The Carmenere grapes are sourced from the El Peñasco Vineyard. Superbly crafted for this price. Great structure and persistence of flavours on the finish. Terrific value. The 2012 vintage of the Carmen Gran Reserva is made from mostly Carmenère grapes, and the wine is matured in French oak for 10 months. Finishes with dark spices and vanilla smoke. Pair with roast beef.

Reviews and Ratings

Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Dark ruby and full-bodied. Medium + acidity with some evident but not over-powering tannins. Black cherry, dusty, black earth, chocolate nose with a palate of warm spices and herbal notes. A long warming finish. Great value! Pair with sea salted, grilled red meats.

Darlene Myers - CAPS Student rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

This is a well priced and very good Carmenere wine. Medium to full-bodied, good structure and spicy fruits with a hint of chocolate.
The soils in which this full-bodied Chilean Carmenere is planted are granitic (granite) and well-suited to the deeply penetrating Carmenere vine roots. Shallower soils and steep slopes moderate the vines' vigour and concentrate flavour. The climate in Apalta is also ideal for this varietal with 29 to 33 degree Celsius average daytime temperatures a and mild nights during the growing season. - Community Wine Reviews
