Reviews and Ratings

Deborah Podurgiel - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

I will be toasting our neighbours to the south this July 4th weekend with a glass of Zinfandel – the chameleon wine. Ask anyone who has tasted “Zin” and each person will have a different opinion about this wine. Some will know it only as blush or ‘white’ Zinfandel, that it may be high in alcohol, dry or medium-sweet, grippy (or no) tannins, and anything between a thin to syrupy mouthfeel. But, California Zin has come into its own and has also come of age -- some CA Zinfandel vineyards are over 130 years old and you really need to taste the wine produced from the grapes of these vines to appreciate the range, style and complexity of Zinfandel.

Delicato Lodi Old Vine Bold Vine Zinfandel is one such wine. Amazingly, at 14.5% abv, it doesn’t pack the heat of a high alcohol wine because of its rich, concentrated fruit flavours. In part, this is because of its terroir – the Lodi region is known for its fine Zinfandel. Generally, the region has cooler summers, warm, sunny days and clear, cooler nights; good air circulation in the vineyard around the 40- to 100-year old Zin vines give optimal conditions for fully ripening the typically, unevenly ripening Zinfandel grape.

The wine is deep ruby red to the core; on the nose and palate, it is rich with fresh blueberry, strawberry fruit, balanced with an equally fresh acidity. Mocha, vanilla flavours fill in mid-palate and a long nutmeg, cinnamon and an olive savouriness finish completes the wine. Tannins are rounding and velvet and the wine has excellent structure and balance to fruit, acidity and tannins. It can definitely cellar for a couple of years, but I would decant (1/2 hour) and drink now with prime rib on the barbie.
