Deliver terrific dark fruit flavours wrapped in a peppery, toasty blanket. Some red and black currant at the core of this tasty wine. Manly yes but I like it too

These 2007 merlots from Hawkes Bay are very good. This one is so fragrant there is almost a jujube quality to it, but let’s say red roses and red and black plums, with a hint of spice which is almost confused with ripe syrah. Palate is still firm, good plummy flavours, gentle oak, all in attractive balance and though not a low cropping rate, the wine is more substantial than many from Sileni. This is the best Triangle Merlot so far. Cellar 5 – 12 years. Source: Gordon Kendall, The Roanoke Times
