A cult Italian wine dubbed one of the Super Tuscans for breaking away from traditional Italian winemaking rules to create blends that eventually became more coveted and expensive than the highest classified wines in the country. Eventually, this winery was granted its very own DOC or appellation in recognition of its quality. The 2013 vintage was a spectacular one, and this wine has a long life ahead of it. Aromas of black fruit, smoke, dark spice and pencil led. Pair with rare filet mignon. Sassicaia has had a cult following since 1974 when a six year old vintage of the wine beat various coveted Bordeaux wines in a Decanter competition. Produced by Tenuta San Guido, this flagship Italian red wine is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc grapes. Long, elegant finish.

Food pairings: filet mignon, pork tenderloin, pizza, pasta, hard cheese.

Reviews and Ratings

Andrea Shapiro rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

85/15 Cab Sauve/Cab Franc blend. Medium ruby colour with an outstanding bouquet in this young super Tuscan. Aromas of cherry, strawberry, menthol, fresh woody leaves and caramel. On the palate this is expressive with plum, blackcurrant, cherry, raspberry, strawberry and prune. Rich with mouthwatering medium acidity, medium plus body and tannins. Very soft and polished. Still a bit young, age another 5-10. Pair with seared rare beef steak, prime rib and mushrooms.
Simon Chen rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

I tasted the 2014 Sassicaia during my trip in Italy back in March. The owner of a small wine shop in Pisa opened this bottle along with the 2014 Guado Al Tasso. This is one of the lightest color Sassicaia I've ever seen. Maybe due to the bad vintage, the 2014 does not have the tannin and complexity compared to other 'classical' Sassicia. It's elegant and mid weight and has good fruits but just not the Sassicaia you would expect. Drink soon!
Quite the price point on this Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia (2014) cult wine from Bolgheri in the Tuscany wine region. This winery was granted its very own DOC or appellation in recognition of its quality. This is a beautiful, elegant super Tuscan red wine blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Fran. Deserves a rare filet mignon to go along with its wine pedigree. Decant for an hour prior to serving or hold in cellar for another three years. - Community Wine Reviews
