Winermakers' Reserve Hawke's Bay

Babich Wines Winermakers' Reserve Hawke's Bay Merlot

Marlborough, New Zealand

Simon scored this wine: 90/100

Tasted @ New Zealand Pure Discovery Walk-around Tasting in Ottawa - Babich is well-known for their pinot noir but I find this Merlot to be exceptionally good for the QPR. It's warm, soft, and pleasant on the palate. Nice body and a medium long finish.

Simon scored this wine: 92/100

Tasted @ New Zealand Pure Discovery Walk-around Tasting in Ottawa - A solid 92+, and probably one of the best sparkling wines I've ever tasted from NZ. It's a blend of 72% Pinot Noir and 28% Chardonnay. Very nice toasty, bioche aromas on the nose. A touch sweetness on the front palate that makes the wine joyful and welcoming. Good lingering bubbles and not too dry and acidic. Champagne quality but also champagne price ~~~

Eclipse

Luna Eclipse Chardonnay 2017

Simon scored this wine: 93/100

Tasted @ New Zealand Pure Discovery Walk-around Tasting in Ottawa - I love the acidity of this chardonnay and the winemaker balanced very well with just a touch of oak and butteriness to round up the texture. On the finish, you can clearly get the minerality and a clean finish

Blue Rock

Luna Blue Rock Pinot Noir 2016

Martinborough, New Zealand

Simon scored this wine: 92/100

Tasted @ New Zealand Pure Discovery Walk-around Tasting in Ottawa - Out of the 3 pinots from this winery, this one is more Burgundy-style. Less red fruits, more early tone, and long lingering tannin on the tongue.

Simon scored this wine: 93/100

Tasted @ New Zealand Pure Discovery Walk-around Tasting in Ottawa - The best pinot of the event in my opinion. It has a very complex mid-palate structure with good grip tannin and acidity. It reminds me of Brewer-Cliffton single yard pinots from the Santa Rita Hill region. Definitely a new-world style pinot but very complex and well balanced.
