Full-bodied with tart cherry and cranberry. Lots of mocha, carraway and dark chocolate notes from generous oak aging. Pierre Castel bred this grape by crossing the century-old French grape Cinsault with a native North American from the Vitus Rupestris family. Castel is little known because of its early bud break and is susceptible to late spring frosts. It also ripens early to mid-season and develops a deep purple colour.

Reviews and Ratings

Courtney Flood rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review:

A very interesting North American hybrid grape produced in Nova Scotia. Very deep, purple-red colour, aromas and flavours of wild berried, plum, anise, and milk chocolate. Very pleasant!
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review:

Deep rich colour on this interesting hybrid grape. Aromas include warm spicy notes, and tart berries, and a note of mocha. Flavours carry though on the palate supported by oak, medium tannin and a medium+ finish. Try this wine with roasts, or slow braised meat.
