Reviews and Ratings

Deborah Podurgiel - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Wow! Hester Creek’s 2019 Character Red has a whole lot of character. This is a full-bodied, spicy and exuberant, rich and meaty red wine blend of Syrah, Petit Verdot, Cabernet and Malbec. On the nose the wine is fragrant with pink florals, blueberry, blackberry, dark cherry, nutmeg and clove spice. Tannins are grippy right from the get-go, but there is also abundant dark fruit, ripe dark cherry, dark plum, baking spice and savoury herb flavours balanced with vibrant acidity to match. The wine could benefit from some time in cellar (try in 2022) or decant two hours prior to pouring with a roast beef dinner or a well-marbled ribeye steak from the grill done rare. Tasted March 2021.
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Fantastic red blend at an amazing price point. The blend is Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec. I visited Hester Creen winery in 2019 so I like to think I walked by a few of these grapes while they are ripening. Aromas of blackberry, plum and currant with hints of white pepper and new leather. Full bodied, smooth, with tons of ripe, juicy plum and berry notes on the palate, and a spicy, hinting towards mineral finish. Enjoy with any grilled meats or grilled vegetables.
Fruit for our Character Red is sourced primarily from our historic estate vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench. The predominant varietals in this vintage are our Italian Merlot along with Syrah and Petit Verdot. Small amounts of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were added to the blend for additional savoury red fruit, peppery elements and to contribute a more dynamic finish. The grapes were hand harvested and hand sorted, then destemmed and left intact to ferment in our Italian Ganimede fermenters. This vintage displays heady scents of blueberry, blackberry, white pepper, clove and allspice. The palate is full and luscious, filled with a dark fruit basket of Italian plums and blueberries along with fresh pepper and creamy caramel. A wine of character and finesse with a lengthy finish.
