Natalie's Score: 91/100

Rich, unctuous and viscous Californian Chardonnay from the heart of Napa Valley. This is such a well-known (and respected) winery. Aromas of toasty oak, pear and smoke. There's no secondary (malolactic) fermentation to preserve the fresh acidity which is nicely balancing. Primary fermentation took place in a combination of stainless steel and French oak barrels to lend creaminess. Only about 15% new French oak, the rest is second use to not add too much oak flavour. Pair with game meats and fowl.

Chardonnay food pairings: scallops with a sesame ginger dressing, grilled chicken breast, pasta with tomato sauce, pork tenderloin..

Reviews and Ratings

Rachelle O'Connor rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A beautifully presented Chardonnay from Napa Valley - the Freemark Abbey Chardonnay delivers on every level. The palate is creamy and luxurious. The bouquet is inviting with scents of peach, grapefruit, tropical fruit and oak spice. The palate is well balanced with flavors of pear, apple and white peach, baking spice and white floral. The finish is long and lingering. Tasted November 2017.
Melanie Lloyd - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

A full-bodied Chardonnay with aromas of peach, tropical fruit, almond, and a touch of wood. On the palate, there are flavours of tart green apples and lemon. It has crisp acidity while remaining rich and creamy, and a nice long nutty finish.

This would pair well with chicken or pasta in a white sauce, crab cakes, or with a cheese platter that includes creamy cheeses and a smoky Gouda.

Freemark Abbey is a well-known California winery from the heart of the Napa Valley. The 2015 Chardonnay is toasty with pear, apple, lemon and vanilla flavours on the palate. Primary fermentation took place in a combination of stainless steel and French oak barrels to lend creaminess and there was no malolactic conversion on this wine, in order to preserve a zesty acidity. The wine was matured in 15% new French oak, with the balance in second-use oak. Pair with roast chicken. - Community Wine Reviews
