Unsworth Vineyards Symphony 2015, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada: A magnificent BC red wine blend of 85% Cabernet Libre and 15% Petit Milo grapes. Exotic aromas of brandy-soaked figs, bing cherry and black raspberry. Polished and approachable, with a long finish. Pair with hearty meat dishes. Marqués de Vitoria Rioja Reserva 2014, Rioja D.O.C.A., Spain: Marqués De Vitoria Reserva 2014 Tempranillo is fragrant on the nose with dark berry compote, sous bois, cocoa and espresso aromas. On the palate, it is supple with spiced dark plum, balsamic, dark chocolate and savoury herb flavours lingering and mouth-filling on the palate. Wine grapes were sourced from vineyards about 650 metres above sea level with a minimum of 12 months ageing in French and American oak barrels. Pour with grilled lamb chops and Pecorino cheese. Food pairings: roast leg of lamb and root vegetables, barbecued pork spareribs, sizzling New York strip steaks, veal chops, strong cheeses. Road 13 Vineyards 5th Element 2013, Similkameen Valley, South Okanagan, British Columbia BC V.Q.A., Canada: An extraordinary wine from BC's Road 13 winery. The 5th Element from the 2013 vineyard cries out for more cellar time. This is a complex, concentrated red wine blend of 45% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Syrah, 13% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot grapes. Aromas of dark fleshy berries, smoke, dark spice and herbs. Gorgeous velvet texture and a finish that lasts forever. The grapes are grown in the winery's Blind Creek Vineyard in the Similkameen Valley as well as the Road 13 Castle Vineyard in the Okanagan Valley. The wine was aged new and second use French oak barrels. This will hold strong in the cellar for 5-10 years or more. Pair with lamb with rosemary.
