Ravenswood Dickerson Single Vineyard Zinfandel 2013, Napa Valley, California, United States: Winemaker Joel Peterson says that "airoir" affects the taste of this wine. The vineyards are planted close to eucalyptus trees and the oil from the trees blows off and coats the grapes lightly imparting a light hint of mint. This wine displays dazzling aromas of ripe red berries and other fruits. It was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, of which 30% was new. The barrels are made from oak primarily from the Navarre forest in France, and they are seasoned outside where the weather impact their final flavour profile and brings out their natural wood-grain tannins. Road 13 Vineyards 5th Element 2013, Similkameen Valley, South Okanagan, British Columbia BC V.Q.A., Canada: An extraordinary wine from BC's Road 13 winery. The 5th Element from the 2013 vineyard cries out for more cellar time. This is a complex, concentrated red wine blend of 45% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Syrah, 13% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot grapes. Aromas of dark fleshy berries, smoke, dark spice and herbs. Gorgeous velvet texture and a finish that lasts forever. The grapes are grown in the winery's Blind Creek Vineyard in the Similkameen Valley as well as the Road 13 Castle Vineyard in the Okanagan Valley. The wine was aged new and second use French oak barrels. This will hold strong in the cellar for 5-10 years or more. Pair with lamb with rosemary. Gérard Bertrand Grand Terroir La Clape Syrah Carignan Mourvèdre 2016, Coteaux De Languedoc La Clape, South Of France A.P., France: A robust southern French red wine blend with vines planted closer to the Mediterranean sea and therefore there are more spice accents in the finished wine along with red fruits, lavender and pepper. The vines are planted at an altitude of 200 metres above sea level, which preserves their freshness with cool nights. The soils consist of limestone plateau that's thousands of years old. Although the Languedoc is the world's largest wine region with 235,000 acres, it is not one homogenous mass or style wine-wise. There are actually 5 sub-climates and more than 50 different grapes used in varying blends. Compare that to the 5 grapes used in Bordeaux. There are also 8 different and distinctive winds that blow through the vines here as compared to one in the Rhone, the Mistral. Pair with steak and hamburgers.
