Château Doisy-Védrines Blend - Meritage 2004

Sauternes, Bordeaux A.C., France

Neil scored this wine: 94/100

Medium-deep gold in colour, this Grand Cru Classe Sauternes is just starting to show its age, after a decade-plus in bottle. Wonderfully expressive nose of marmalade, honeycomb, lemon tart, and crisp baguette. On the palate, sweetness perfectly in check by acid, and the finish is long and supple. Honey, marzipan, peach, hint of fig & allspice. Many layers. A fantastic Sauternes - easily could cellar a decade or two longer. Tasted February 2016.

Deep ruby with thick legs, with a medium+ intensity on the nose. Complex developing nose of blackberry, Bing cherry, baking spices, cola, leather, vanilla, earthy/newsprint notes and a touch of mint. On the palate, high alcohol, full body and medium+ tannins, fairly intense but fully balanced. Flavours follow the nose offering complexity with red berry compote, pepper, dried herbs, baking spices and a medium+ finish. This is drinking well now; but will easily age another decade. Tasted October 2016.

Château Mont-Redon 2012

Châteauneuf-Du-Pape, Rhône A.C., France

Neil scored this wine: 93/100

Aromas of smoke, tarmacadam, earth, leather, cassis, red fruit compote, mushrooms, baking spice, bramble and a hint of violets. On the palate, nicely old-world austere but with a strong presence simultaneously. Smoked meats, red/black fruit jam, black liquorice. A lush, almost silky savoury/salinity finish. Finely structured and on the savoury/gamey side - this CdP is drinking well now, but will be happy with another 5-10 (or more) years in bottle. Tasted December 2016.

Pale garnet intensity. Noses of dusty rose, sour cherry, dried cranberry, mineral and herbs. On the palate, high acid, mid-weight, medium+ tannins, with a finish that goes on forever. Gritty mouthfeel, peppery notes with a melange of savoury herbs. Listan Negro from the Canary Islands - an absolute treat. Tasted March 2018.

Lush with lots of red fruit compote, some Nibs, sage, black pepper and aged balsamic. More fruit than savoury. Tannins are medium+, but still quite smooth. Well-balanced, it carries 15% with ease. This CdP is drinking well now, and will certainly age. Tasted September 2018.
