Solaia

Antinori Solaia 2011

Perhaps at the top of my list as one of the best wines I've ever had the pleasure to taste. A brilliant deep ruby garnet in the glass with slow extracting legs. The SuperTuscan nose has Port-like qualities such as dark cherry, prune, black plum(like just bitten),raspberry, sweet spices, violets, vanilla, earth. The palate is pure silk with repeated fruit along with cedar, toast, toffee and mocha. So complex yet so elegant. This is a gorgeous wine to sip and savour now but there's potential for more ageing - 10++ years. This wine is a collectors must-have. Long warming finish. I want finer cut of grilled beef with this wine...or on it's own. Tasted: April 2015

Quality abounds in this beautiful Metodo Classico Italian sparkling wine from the prestigious house of Ferrari Trentodoc. This elegant Cru sparkler has been crafted using 100% Chardonnay grapes selected with extreme care from the Maso Pianizza vineyard. It has been aged 12 years on it's lees with selected yeasts from Ferrari's own cultures and disgorged in 2014. This is a sparkling produced for longevity and sure to rival the top Champagne houses. Complex and enticing like a sweet seduction - it leaves one wanting more. Vanilla, smoke, honey, floral, wet straw, white chocolate, lychee, toffee and butter. Tiny persistent mousse create sparkle to the deep lemon colour and carry enticing aromas to the nose. The palate finishes with a lingering toffee and biscuit sweetness. This sparkling Italian wine would make any celebration classy and memorable. Tasted: October 2015 #FerrariTrento

Decadent. Deep lemon colour with aromas and flavours of lemon meringue pie, butterscotch, apple, butter, yogurt, cedar ,blossoms, cream corn, sweet spices. Rich and creamy with an on and on finish of just about everything...This is a Chardonnay lover's Chardonnay. Pair with a seafood rich dinner or just savour it on it's own. This is a great gift. Reif Estate Winery First Growth Merlot 2016

What makes a wine truly memorable? I’ve experienced a handful of remarkable wines and they all have the same common denominators: Company, location, time, food, and - of course - ambiance. About last night: It was positively balmy for December, but harsh winds were howling outside. Safe indoors, we dined by candlelight aside a twelve-foot, aromatic Balsam Fir in all its twinkling splendour. Our entrée, roast beef, was a perfect medium-rare and begged for a red wine that would respect it’s weight class. Some earthy qualities would be perfect for the mushroom risotto side dish. Of course, I brought a Reif Estate First-Growth Merlot 2016 VQA Niagara River. A winery-only marque, this hundred-dollar vintage offered a beautiful deep ruby colour with thick, slow legs on the glass for a silky smooth, warm, alcoholic finish. The aromas were like ten Lords-a-leaping - ripe plum, cherry, chocolate, fresh red berries, blueberry, leather, baking spices, earthy, and cigar. This merlot was beautiful after decanting for an hour; though, it became memorable after ninety minutes! It paired perfectly with both roast and risotto for an elevated meal befitting the season. This is a wine - and an evening - for the books!

Very impressed with this lovely opaque Malbec. A sensory overload of ripe red berries, cherry cordial, violets and blossoms, garrigue and a lift of earthiness. Smooth and dry with a lengthy assorted warm berry compote finish. Scored a whopping 94 points from Wine Enthusiast and well deserved. Enjoy this wine tonight with a finer cut of grilled red meat but this wine will reward you over the next 10+ years. $30 a little hard sell but worth the price for the performance.
