In late 1996, Guillermo Toro, distinguished Chilean businessman and supplier of glass containers to the wine industry for more than 50 years, proposed an expansion of the family business that would help him realize his long-held dream of filling his bottles with his own high quality red wine. After a rigorous 2-year search for land, he acquired the property that would come to fulfill his very high expectations in the Coastal Maipo Valley. For the Toro family, this new project stimulated a special sensitivity for the land as a place of encounter and source of entrepreneurial development. Viña Chocalán’s location in the coastal or Pacific area of the Maipo Valley has a particularly special potential for producing very high quality wines with a style of their own. Construction began on the vinification facility in 2002. The family insisted that the design blend harmoniously with its natural setting and also incorporate high technology for producing fine wines. Another key aspect of this project has been to form a good team and work with the best professional consultants in their respective areas. Viña Chocalán bottled its first wines in 2003, thereby fulfilling the founder’s dream. Today the winery employs all five of his children.
