Tahbilk is owned by the Purbrick family and has a very colorful history that started in 1925 when savvy business man Reginald bought the property sight unseen planning to uproot the vines and sub-divide into dairy farms. His plans changed when he was convinced by his son in rehabilitating the winery instead. And as they say, the rest is history!
The winery is located in the Nagambie Lakes region of Central Victoria.
The Purbrick’s have five generations of family ownership and are the oldest family owned winery in the State of Victoria.
Tahbilk's '1860 Vines' Shiraz is produced from a 1/2 hectare un-grafted, pre-phylloxera (a root louse that sucks sap from grapevines, reducing their productivity and eventually killing them. This pest’s infamous claim to fame is the devastation of European vineyards in the late 1800’s) original Estate planting - amongst the oldest Shiraz vines in the world.
Since its inaugural release in 1979 this piece of liquid history has become one of the most sought after and collectable wines throughout the world.
In the glass, it is a light ruby red with a multitude of legs.
The nose is intensely complex with aromas of forest flor, spice, ripe blackberries, dried rosemary, toasted oak and cacao powder.
The palate is elegant, refined and superbly complex. Dry with ripe dark berry, plum, dark chocolate, a little tobacco and some savory notes. Velvety tannins meet refreshing acidity!
Make this wine the center of attention if you are going to enjoy it with food… I would simply have it with the darkest chocolate mousse!
