The Tommasi family has made wine near Verona since 1902, so after four generations the trial phase is clearly over. They’re Amarone royalty, and this Ripasso is the family’s baby Amarone. Once the Amarone is made, the young Valpolicella is passed back over the leftover grape skins. It’s an old farmers’ trick that wastes nothing and adds richness and spice. Tommasi released its first Ripasso in 1995. Silky tannins carry black pepper and ripe cherry in this generous red that offers excellent value.

Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore food pairings: beef short ribs braised in Amarone, grilled lamb chops, mushroom and sausage pasta.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
