Sweet black plums on the nose and palate of this supple, robust wine. This turbo-charged red wine is made from Primitivo grapes, aka Zinfandel. The fruit is blackened and charred with lots and lots of toasty oak. Finishes with mocha and oak. Great with BBQ or grilled meats.

Primitivo di Manduria food pairings: three-sausage pizza, charcuterie, sausage cassoulet.

Reviews and Ratings

Meg Charette - WSET ADV rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A delightfully intoxicating Primitivo from Puglia Salento. Varvaglione is a family owned winery passed down through generations, and is one of the oldest wineries in Southern Italy.

Aged in bottle for almost 5 years.

Intense and complex aromas of stewed black cherry, dried blackberry, and plum skins, with powerful savoury notes, a hickory gaminess, and subtle undertones of mocha coffee bean. High intensity of flavours on the palate mirroring the aromas, with dried blackberry and hickory dominating. Dry, full bodied, with medium acidity. Mouthfeel has a soft warming sensation from high alcohol, with highly grippy tannins. Long lingering finish of tannic plum skins, dried blackberry and hickory.
Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Jammy berry and spice aromas with a rich off-dry full-bodied, ripe stewed berry flavoured finish. Tannins and medium-mild (dusty) with medium acidity. Enjoy with gourmet burgers. Tasted July 2017 by @sommsossa | bespoketastings.ca
Primitivo di Manduria from Puglia is becoming increasingly popular. Papale Linea Oro 2014 is robust and ripe with sweet dark plums, smoke and spice. Tannins are plushy. Pair with smoked ribs. - Community Wine Reviews
