I recommend the Chocolate Block every vintage as it's a consistently great wine! This full-bodied red wine is a blend of mostly shiraz grapes and some Grenache, cabernet sauvignon, cinsault and a splash of viognier grapes. It's savoury, complex and delicious: wow! Cassis, blackberry and cedar forest. Meaty and enticing, full-bodied wonderful with a concentrated weave of anise, cigar box, pepper and meaty notes. Extremely juicy and mouthwatering in a food-happy kind of way. Balanced and delicious: this is a terrific red to red if you're not familiar with South African wines, or even if you are. Highly recommended.

Reviews and Ratings

Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

The Chocolate Block 2014 - 1742 Barrels 14.5% . 73% Syrah, 12% Granache, 10% Cab Sauv, 4% Cinsault, 1% Viognier. Medium ruby red in colour, the nose shows a beautiful and complex boquet of dark berries, black plum, fresh herbs, and smoked meat. Fresh and vibrant with layers of dark berries, roasted beets, dark chocolate, with a savoury finish. A very impressive red blend from South Africa that would be dynamite with grilled tenderloin and a red jus. Enjoy 2017-2025. Tasted January 2017. 92 points. Matt Steeves - www.mattswinepicks.com
Andrea Shapiro rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review:

Medium ruby colour with aromas of blackberry cherry, plum, tar, anise and dusty sulphur. This particular vintage doesn’t have many chocolate notes to offer. Stemmy, minerals and earthy undertones. Flavours are comprised of : cassis, black cherry, pencil shavings, graphite, lavender, truffles and peppery sapling. Medium body and medium plus acidity, tannin and finish length with blackberry at the end. Pair with lamb sausages and char grilled hamburgers.
86 points - tasted November 2016
