Tasted this wine after a big full bodied Barossa Shiraz. In comparison this Chilean Syrah is medium bodied, a bit more acidic and elegant. Dark ruby, smoke and red fruit aromas with a touch of earthiness. Medium tannins with black currant and ripe berry flavours. I think this is a wine that could still use some time in the bottle. Tasted June 24, 2016.
A single varietal Syrah from Villard Estate winery from a vineyard within Casablanca Valley, Chile. On the nose, notes of black fruit, mocha and oak vanilla. The palate is dominated by a rich cocoa flavour along with black cherry and dark berries. Medium bodied and well balanced with velvety tannins and firm acidity. Casablanca is better known for cool varietals, but with the right sites and sun exposure, reds can grow very well here. Hand-harvested from young vines, this Syrah is vibrant and fruit-forward. The acidity will aid in the ageability of this wine. Skin maceration for 1 week before fermentation and partial maturation in stainless steel. Partially matured for 8 months in American oak.
