Reviews and Ratings

Carolyn Hetke rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

If you are not familiar with the Mencía grape this is the perfect place to start! Medium bodied with ripe raspberry and red currant on the nose and a hint of barnyard adding complexity. From a single vineyard with 35-50 year old vines. Great fruit concentration, silky smooth with good weight. Excellent value. Drink or hold for a few years. Serve with charcuterie, firm cheeses, burgers or any light BBQ fare. Tasted February 2020. www.thewineloverskitchen.com
Linda Mertes WSET 2 rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

You likely would come across the Mencia grape as you follow the pilgrims' trail to Santiago, northern Spain. This wine comes from the area of Leon and has red fruit and pepper aromas with some herbal notes. Black fruit on the palate with medium acidity and high tannins. The dry, minty finish leads to pairing with lamb or beef. A good price for such a versatile wine. Decant or age. Tasted February 2020.
Señorío De La Antigua Finca Cabanela 2015 Mencia is great value under $14. Produced by Alvarez de Toledo, this is a medium-plus-bodied, single-vineyard Mencia with earthy, dark fruit aromas on the nose, dry with vibrant acidity, blackberry, plum, spicy and fresh on the palate. Nicely done for the price. Enjoy now and for the next five years. Pair with roast gamebirds. - Community Wine Reviews
