Natalie's Score: 89/100

A juicy, robust Marlborough red wine made from the Syrah grapes. Fleshy ripe black plums and smoke. The vines grow in this family-owned winery's vineyards in a warm, sheltered gully of their 17 Valley vineyard. The grapes were hand-picked and hand-plunged during fermentation. Pair with lamb.

Syrah food pairings: lamb shanks in red wine and roasted garlic, grilled lamb lollipops, stuffed lamb tenderloin.

Reviews and Ratings

Melanie Lloyd - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

On the nose, this Syrah has aromas of juicy blackberries, violets, baking spices, a touch of vanilla, sweet tobacco and hints of menthol.

In terms of flavours, there are plenty of ripe dark berries and cloves. The tannins are silky and are well harmonized with the flavours.

Tasted January 2018
Mount Riley 2016 is a great value Syrah from Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand. Unusual for this are, this is a fresh Syrah after a Northern Rhone style. Look for crushed violets, dark berry, plum, smoke and cracked pepper flavours on this easy-to-drink Syrah. - Community Wine Reviews

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a fiesty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
