Great value on this rich appassimento, Gran Reserva Chilean Carmenère. Mayu 2017 is intense on the nose with ripe blackberry compote and mocha aromas, fresh herbs, intense ripe berry, dark plum, fig, white pepper, sweet dried tobacco leaf and spicy flavours smooth and long on the palate. The 2017 vintages was a warm and riper vintage, although the acidity remains fresh as wine grapes are sourced from vines at 600 meters in altitude. Grapes are left to hang an extra two months on the vine and lose about 35% of their moisture, become concentrated as in the Amarone process, but on the vine. The wine is matured in American oak barrels up to 10 months. Tannins are dusty.

Carmenère food pairings: hearty meat dishes, roast pork, turkey.

Reviews and Ratings

Christian Marcoux rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Quite rare to enjoy a Chilean wine made Appassimento style from Carmenere grapes. The Mayu Gran Reserva 2017 offers aromas of black plum, mission fig, green peppercorn, slate, caramel and sweet tobacco. A full body, fresh acidity and gentle tannins give this wine a rich taste. The finish is round and mellow, providing easy drinkability. Palate: cherry, plum, leather, white pepper, chocolate, caramel and tobacco.
