Reviews and Ratings

Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Nicely full bodied, with lots of lush, ripe berries and red fruiton the nose. Warm smoke and black pepper mingle on the palate. Medium plus tannin and a lengthy finish. Pair with rich charcuterie or roasted elk burgers.
Tasting notes
Subtle aromatics of dark chocolate, dried fruit akin to dried cranberry and red currant along with white pepper. The currant carries forward on the palate held up by cedar and cigar box. The tannin is smooth making for a very supple body and long refined finish.

Winemakers’ notes
The Silver Bridge Syrah is a part of Kacaba’s original planting of Syrah dating back to 1998. It consists of six rows in the main block of the property that can be seen while on the silver Bailey bridge. This section of Syrah is slightly smaller than the Terrace vineyard, yet is just as productive. The quality of fruit is arguably the best amongst the three block of Syrah. This block consistently achieves the highest sugar levels and concentration of flavour. In many years it is also the block that ripens the latest. This also the portion of property that is least affected by cold winters allowing for consistent production levels and quality.

As a vintage 2013 did show some challenges, particularly when achieving full sugar levels in Syrah. The cooler conditions during July and August along with heavier than average rain through September meant that what is typically seen for syrah in Niagara may not normally be encountered. Rather; the acid levels and tannin are accentuated and the spice component becomes rather obvious. Lighter barrel ageing in newer oak and traditional French yeast strains make for a more medium bodied style of wine that is very approachable.

Syrah, in many people’s opinion, is not necessarily a good fit for Niagara. Rather with proper selection of vineyard and clone, great things can be achieved. Combine optimal sites and clones with careful vineyard management and watchful winemaking techniques make for very fine syrah in Niagara.
