Reviews and Ratings

Deborah Podurgiel WSET IV Candidate - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

The Pinot Gris grapes for the 2020 Haywire were sourced from the winery’s two organic vineyards, Switchback and Secrest. Grapes were fermented with native yeasts and pressed into large format concrete tanks, stainless-steel tanks and oak foudres, then aged on lees for six months, filtered and bottled. This vintage is glossy and creamy with subtle pear, peach, guava, lemon tarte and fine herb flavours fresh on the palate. Serve slightly chilled with seafood salads and chilled, fresh shrimp finger sandwiches. Tasted May 2022.

The word “haywire” originated with haywire or baling wire farmers and ranchers used to tie bales of hay. As a bale of hay was opened with a hatchet to feed livestock, the wire would spring around the farmer tangle and become unpredictable -- an apt description of Christine Coletta and Steve Lornie’s impromptu decision to own a winery. With home vineyard Switchback and sister properties Garnet Valley Ranch and Secrest Mountain now certified organic, Haywire wines are recognized as some of the most game-changing wines from the region. Haywire was founded in 2009.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
