Reviews and Ratings

Deborah Podurgiel - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

This is a bright, refreshing premier vintage of Grüner Veltliner for Fort Beren’s Winery with grapes sourced from Bordertown Winery vineyards. A dry, medium-bodied Gruner with excellent acidity for food with zesty citrus, hay, soft petrol notes on the nose. Dry, floral, grassy and fresh on the palate with soft petrol, citrus zest flavours and a lingering finish.

Tasted August 2021 and poured with Paradise and Silver Moon oysters on the half shell with just a squeeze of lemon juice, as well as citrus pepper panko-crusted gray cod fish and chips. Excellent with both but was an amazing match with the citrusy Silver Moon oysters and the Paradise oysters added a balanced element of salt to the acidity. Acidity in wine can compete with the salt food, but this citrusy white is kind of Grüner meets Sancerre. If oysters and seafood are not your schtick, try it with a nosh of butcher’s smoked andouille sausage.

Fort Beren’s are looking forward to their first vintage of estate grown Grüner Veltliner in 2021 or 2022. The 2020 Grüner from Bordertown Winery grapes was made with free run juice only from whole-cluster pressed grapes giving the wine a fresh fruity and creamy texture on the palate. Tasted August 2021.

Footnote: In June 2022, I had the opportunity to again taste Fort Beren's 2020 Grüner Veltliner and it has evolved nicely. On the nose, the wine is fresh with white-fleshed peach, lemon-lime citrus and grassy aromas and is showing elegance on the palate with white peach, lemon-lime zest, white pepper spice, grassy and tropical fruit notes balanced bright acidity.
