Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc W.O. Swartland from South Africa is a medium-bodied white blended from a single parcel of low-yielding old bush vines with splashes of Sémillon and Grenache Blanc added to the mix, fermented naturally with native yeasts and aged in a combination of old casks, concrete, and large barrels, and at this price it is one of the most reliable overachievers in the category. On the nose it's fragrant and fresh, with white nectarine, acacia blossom, a whisper of warm honey, and a cool saline minerality from the Swartland's granite soils. The palate is lively and focused, with lemon curd, tangerine zest, fresh ginger, and a long, clean finish with bright, food-friendly acidity. Adi Badenhorst grew up at Groot Constantia, made his first wine at thirteen, trained at Château Angelus and with Alain Graillot in the Rhône, then spent nine years as winemaker at Rustenberg before buying a 60-hectare piece of land in the Swartland's Paardeberg in 2008 with his cousin Hein, where he farms low-intervention, sustainably farmed old vines. Serve it well chilled now through 2029 with grilled pork chops and herbs, where the wine's bright acidity and lees-derived texture tie the dish together, or try it with goat cheese galette where its saline mineral edge cuts through the richness.
