Avondale Jonty’s Ducks Pekin 2021 Chenin Blanc opens with aromas of ripe peach, tropical papaya, lemon and delicate chamomile flowers. Made from organically farmed Chenin Blanc with small amounts of Roussanne, Sémillon and Viognier—where ducks patrol the vineyard eating snails and insects—and wild-fermented on its lees, it delivers a medium body and crisp freshness. Flavors of green apple, pear, white-fleshed stone fruit and apricot are lifted by zesty lime peel and a whisper of white-pepper spice, all carried through a clean, straightforward finish. Best enjoyed with roast chicken or pork tenderloin.

Chenin Blanc food pairings: spinach and pepper jack stuffed chicken, pork tenderloin, toasted ravioli served with Alfredo sauce.

Reviews and Ratings

From the Paarl wine region, Avondale's Jonty's Ducks Pekin is a medium-bodied white blend of mostly Chenin Blanc with the balance made up of Roussanne, Viognier & Semillon. The wine was fermented with wild yeast at between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius with a portion fermented in used large oak barrels. Look for beeswax, lime zest, grapefruit, tropical and stonefruit notes on the palate. Winery owner, Johnathan Grieve employs a “posse” of ducks that patrol the vineyard looking with a taste for snails which eat the grapevines. The ducks are an eco-friendly alternative to harmful chemical poisons to kill pests and act as the guardians of the vines on Avondale. - Community Wine Reviews
