Ascheri Moscato D'asti 2007

D.O.C.G. Piedmont, Italy
3366 days ago

Adam scored this wine: 92/100

This sweet fizzy white is jam packed with flavours of citrus and floral notes with a beautiful lychee finish. In the immortal words of Frank the Tank, “once it hits your lips, it’s so good!” The Cristina Ascheri Moscato d’Asti make a perfect aperitif or can be paired with a wide range of desserts (except for chocolate). The best part about this is wine is that not only is it a great deal at $17.95, but at 5.1% alcohol you can indulge and still be the consummate host.

Fillaboa Albariño 2009

D.O., Rías Baixas, Spain

Adam scored this wine: 92/100

The 2009 Fillaboa from Spain’s Rías Baixas region is an dry wine made from the indigenous Albariño grape. Albariño is a true hidden gem. Not many people outside the inner sanctum of the wine geek know the pleasure this white Spanish grape can give. This wine has intense flavours of lemon, green apple, with subtle floral notes and a smokiness that imparts a sense of complexity. The wine has good acidity and great minerality. This wine will definitely improve with a year or two of age. I would recommend pairing the Fillaboa with grilled shrimp, seared scallops or my favourite paella. As for cheese, I would recommend trying it with a swiss or a Camembert. At $15.95, this is a good wine at a great value. I highly recommend searching out the 2009 Fillaboa before it disappears.

Studert-Prüm Riesling 2009

Adam scored this wine: 91/100

The 2009 Studert-Prüm Riesling Kabinett from Germany’s Mosel region is an off-dry wine with refreshing flavours of lemon, fresh lime, white peach, apricot with a sweet floral note that intertwines the fruit. The wine has incredible acidity that counter-balances the sweetness and makes it vibrant and thirst-quenching. With only 8.1% alcohol, the 2009 Studert-Prüm willl let you enjoy your afternoon without knocking you out for the count like so many other high alcohol wines might. This wine can age, but to get the most refreshing experience, drink it ASAP. Perhaps on your next sunny weekend afternoon.

St. Joseph

Pierre Gaillard St. Joseph Syrah 2007

A.C., Rhône, France

Adam scored this wine: 90/100

2007 Pierre Gaillard Saint Joseph is an exceptionally crafted red wine. This full bodied powerful wine made from 100% Syrah has flavours of blackberries, black cherry, plum, spices and oak. It also has a well integrated seam of white and black pepper that is typical of well made red wines from the Northern Rhone. This wine is guaranteed to improve if allowed to age for another three to five years. I would recommend pairing the Pierre Gaillard Saint Joseph with a grilled flank steak, homemade hamburgers or (for the more adventurous) venison. As for cheese, I would recommend trying it with a Manchego. At $22.95, I highly recommend searching out the 2007 Pierre Gaillard Saint Joseph. This is a beautiful wine from an under appreciated region

Terre Di Orazio

Cantina Di Venosa Terre Di Orazio Aglianico Del Vulture 2007

D.O.C.G., Basilicata, Italy

Adam scored this wine: 90/100

The 2007 Cantina Di Venosa Terre Di Orazio a very food friendly red wine made 100% from the Aglianico grape. It has flavours of violets, cassis, black cherries and well integrated hints of oak, smoke and dark chocolate. The tannins are very smooth and help to bring the wine together. The Cantina Di Venosa Terre Di Orazio is drinking well right now, but will develop very nicely over the next 5 years. I strongly encourage you to seek out this wine and buy a bunch of bottles. Drink one tonight, drink a few through this fall and winter and “re-discover” the rest in a few years.
