Grand Cru Clos Vougeot

Edouard Delaunay Grand Cru Clos Vougeot 2018

Nuits St. Georges, Côte D'or, Burgundy, France
1469 days ago

Craig scored this wine: 95/100

Edouard Delaunay’s 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru holds nothing back, giving you plenty to talk about and enjoy. This red Bourgogne’s alluring and abundant aroma suggests a cherry and black berry jam teamed up with red licorice, mint and eucalyptus. This pinot noir feels silky, dessert dry and tilts to full-bodied. I particularly like how this Grand Cru tastes. Its flavours are in no rush to leave as they share with you cherries, berries, stacks of herbal goodness and sweet spices. Plenty to talk about and enjoy in this wine? Absolutely. This is a gorgeous wine from the team leading Edouard Delaunay’s rebirth in Bourgogne. What is Clos de Vougeot? It is the largest Grand Cru appellation within France’s Côte de Nuit appellation. Clos de Vougeot is a 50+ hectares vineyard subdivided between 80 owners. The 2018 Edouard Delaunay’s grape were handpicked from plots within Clos de Vougeot that feature limestone and clayey soil. Esk Valley Winemakers Reserve Syrah 2013

Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

Craig scored this wine: 94/100

This syrah is a sensory event in a glass. From New Zealand, this aged red reveals baking spices and forest floor notes that complement a core of stewed cherry and cassis. Visually appealing, this product of Hawke's Bay is ruby red tinged with purple hues. Full bodied, this syrah has a long finish.

DR3

St. Hugo DR3 Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

South Australia, Australia

Craig scored this wine: 94/100

The 2021 DR3 Cabernet Sauvignon is a show not to be missed. This DR3 is a collab between St. Hugo, a winery in Australia’s famed Barossa Valley, and Italian-Australian Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo. The scents alone are worth the price of admission. The multitude of aromas are complex in the best sense of that word, evoking ripe blueberries and dark cherries, pressed flowers, leather, graphite, cedar, earth, eucalyptus, and vanilla. All are dialed down, but that's just a reminder that beauty can be found in all intensity levels. Feels full bodied, round, grippy and desert dry. Don’t take my word for it. Open a bottle for yourself. Enjoy. PS - Some esteemed reviewers say let this Cab age for another 10 years.

Brilliant

Westcott Vineyards Brilliant Sparkling 2020

Vinemount Ridge, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario V.Q.A., Canada

Craig scored this wine: 93/100

The superb sensory experience this bottle just gave me has me feeling thankful, thankful for the wine pro who put it on my radar (you know who you are!) The 2020 vintage of the Brilliant is a beautiful expression of Ontario grown Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Noir and Westcott Vineyard’s wine making sorcery. How come? It is because this bubbly’s visual, aromatic, and taste appeal checks all my boxes when it comes to sparklers crafted in the traditional method. It is the immeasurable streams of pretty bubbles everywhere in my glass. It is the complex aromatics of brioche and crunchy green apple. It is the elegantly delicious taste, ebbing and flowing with layered notes of biscuit and citrus (white grapefruit pith, lemon zest come to mind) but also dialed down doses of roasted almond and slate like minerality. The highlight of the Brilliant, for me, is how it feels in my mouth. Its crisp. Its extra dry. Its texture is gentle and etching. The mouth feel is measured in minutes not seconds. So is the finish. Oh my. Applause to Westcott Vineyards. Gratitude to the wine pro who recommended this one to me. If appellation info delivers dopamine to your system, read on. This bottle of bubbly hails from the Vinemount Ridge appellation, a wine appellation in the Niagara region of Ontario, Canada’s largest province. Some call Vinemount Ridge a regional appellation because it is within the boundaries of another, larger appellation, the Niagara Peninsula. Tasted July 2025

Big Head Wines Chenin Blanc 2023

Craig scored this wine: 93/100

Well, this is delicious. This Chenin Blanc leaves on my senses an aroma, flavour, feel impression that’s attractive, mild mannered, and magnetic. This is certainly not a one (glass) and done. I want to experience this again. It feels tantalizingly textured, creamy, and bone dry. Elegant expressions of ripe yet juicy stone fruit, waxiness, floral perfume, sweet lychee. and oxidizing apple are everywhere. It’s as if they sink into my tongue and release over time. So nice. If appellation awareness is your thing, this creation is classified as Niagara-on-the-Lake, a region in the Niagara region of Ontario, Canada. Big Head Wines describes itself as having over 20 years of winemaking experience, and specializing in small-batch, artisanal creations, utilizing unique techniques such as wild fermentation, the appassimento method, and various aging vessels to enhance the depth and flavour of their wines. Tasted June 2025
