Vintages Wine Picks October 2, 2010
White WineLa Crema Chardonnay 2008, California, United States: Vintages Wine Panel: The vineyards of Sonoma Coast have a long, cool, even-keeled growing season. Fog and winds from the nearby Pacific Ocean moderate temperatures throughout the growing season leading to an ideal slow-ripening process. The autumn is extended and the increased hang time results in highly concentrated aromas and flavours (apple, pear, citrus and vanilla amongst them) and crisp acids. La Crema ages this wine in a combination of both new and seasoned French and American oak for seven months, lending the wine a pretty smoky/oaky flavour. My note: Big, round and lovely with butterscotch, smoke, green apples and peach. Drink: 2010-2013. 962886 13.90% D 750 mL $29.95 Score: 89/100. October 2, 2010

Miguel Torres Mas Borràs Pinot Noir 2008, D.O., Penedés, Spain: Vintages Wine Panel: The fruit for this gorgeous Pinot Noir is sourced exclusively from the small Mas Borràs vineyard where yields are kept very low to concentrate the fruit flavours. Aged in new Nevers French oak barriques for several months, it is rich with violet, cocoa, pomegranate, raspberry and earth aromas. Sparkling WineFreixenet Brut Nature Vintage Reserva Cava Macabeo Parellada 2007, Spain, Método Tradicional, Spain: Vintages Wine Panel: Freixenet used the indigenous Macabeo and Parellada grapes for this vintage-dated, traditional-method fizz. The earlier ripening Macabeo gives the wine a bright freshness, while the Parellada brings the fruit and the structure. The resulting bubbly is both quite flavourful and refreshingly crisp. My note: Stunning for the price! Crisp, toasty and tasty. Aromas of green apples and lime. Terrific! Drink: 2010-2013. 180844 12% XD 750 mL $16.95 Score: 89/100. October 2, 2010
