Reflecting winegrower Jacques Mercier's roots, Solune combines the french words for sun (soleil) and moon (lune), to convey the premium grape growing advantage we enjoy in this beautiful Northern California Sierra Foothills area, an unusually large temperature difference between our warmdays and our cool nights (40-50°F).
We specialize in small-lot production of intense and well structured wines thriving under these ideal ripening conditions.

However, beyond just getting grape juice to ferment, purposeful wine production involves a series of small decisions guided by a clear vision of the desired finished wine. The resulting quality is directly proportional to how many of these decisions are the right ones towards realizing that vision, combined with a meticulous attention to detail.

Our winemaking vision involves producing wines with intensity, complexity, varietal clarity, and balance, where complexity is not destroyed by one component dominating the others. These attributes ensures that our wines can be fully enjoyed on their own, but can also provide the flexibility required to be a good match for many dishes. On the other hand, powerful and/or delicious are also qualifiers we are striving for, which is another way of saying our wines can be both "serious" and fun at the same time.

We will strive to provide local and visiting wine lovers with at least one new delightful tasting experience on each visit, with the hope of welcoming them as often as possible to share our passion for wine. To accomplish this goal, our wine list will include staggered releases of mainstream varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon/Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, etc.), as well as more "off-Broadway" varieties (Tempranillo, Petite Sirah, Barbera, Muscat, Gewurztraminer) and even some off-off-Broadway varieties, for the more adventurous tasters (Malbec, Tannat, Graciano, Sauvignon Musqué, etc.). In addition, we will produce interesting blends involving many of these varieties. Some of the smaller quantity releases will only be available via our wine club.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
