Shadow Ranch embraces the concepts of sustainable farming and having as little impact on the environment as possible. The operation is 100% solar powered and our vineyards are organically farmed. Our wine making approach is traditional and is intentionally hands off as to have as little an impact on the finished wine as possible. All the wines are handcrafted and minimal mechanization and intervention is used in the process. Attention to detail and the expression of the varietal is our focus.

Searching out the best vineyards, establishing a rapport with the owners and working to get the best possible
fruit makes the best possible wine.

Shadow Ranch emerged as a dream to create unique wine; distinctive in flavor and quality, that define excellence. Our exceptional portfolio of wines, is consistently characterized by our commitment to individualistic style and an uncommon quality. Upon his arrival in 2001 to the Sierra Foothills Sam began searching for an appropriate site to grow wine grapes and quickly recognized that the best wines in the Sierra Foothills were made from grapes grown in Fair Play.
With the purchase of the 80 estate complete, we began planting our vineyards and converting the old farm house and barns into our winery and tasting room. Today we have a fully contemporary winery dedicated to making world-class wine. With a total production of a 1500 cases, Shadow Ranch is able to devote their attention to five carefully chosen varietals: Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and their one white wine, a wonderful Sauvignon Blanc. In addition to that there is La Puerta made in the traditional multi-vintage port style.

The wines are produced in small, half ton fermenters. Red wines are lightly crushed, hand punched 3-4 times a day to submerge the skins and the temperature is carefully controlled to obtain the right extraction. After fermentation is complete we use a gentle basket pressing and small French oak barrels for the ageing process on all the red wines.Minimal additions are made by picking the grapes at the peak of ripeness. The relationship between our land, heritage and tradition has, for many years, moulded our philosophy, yet we never loose sight of innovation in our quest to produce a better bottle of wine.

We believe our wines are an expression of the soil and of the grape variety, thus enhancing the unique personality and character of each wine. Ultimately, our goal is produce wines of quality that are modern and fruit forward, yet connected to their heritage.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
