“I am ever grateful to my parents,” says Jason. “Without their encouragement and their decision to sacrifice some of the Barossa’s greatest Shiraz and Grenache, I could never have realised my dream of producing distinctive, handcrafted Barossa wines.”

After working around the clock to make his own wines while maintaining full-time employment in other wineries, Jason decided to make a break in 2006 and concentrate on his own wines.

“I now have my own facility – it’s located on my parents’ property, which brings me full circle back to my roots. It’s fantastic to have total control of the winemaking process,” says Jason.

After moving into the shed, Jason vinified fruit from other growers, crushing a total of 25 tonne to produce 1300 cases of wine. “I continued making Nitschke Block and Thiele Road as single-vineyard wines and introduced the Dust Kicker range of regional blended wines, which is dedicated to my trusty old work boots,” he muses. “I also have a very special and rare Shiraz in the pipeline, with fruit sourced from a vineyard planted in the 1880s.”

Jason says his primary aim, as a proud Barossa winemaker, has always been to showcase the variation in the region’s vineyards and allow natural characteristics to shine through. “My winemaking style is purposely low-intervention – I like the fruit to speak for itself and tell the story of my life in the Barossa,” he concludes.

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
