Samsara is a Sanskrit word meaning the eternal cycle of life. The world we live in now. One of passion, oneness and harmony. This idea is key to the philosophy of Chad and Mary Melville’s Samsara wines. Chad and Mary produce limited releases of Pinot Noir and Syrah from micro-sites within carefully selected vineyards.

"Farming is a metaphor for many of life’s most important lessons. Though it is our propensity as humans to do so, farming teaches us that there are elements occurring in nature that are far beyond our control. After I apply my knowledge and passion to the vineyard, I must then surrender my efforts to a causality about which I have little say. Within this struggle, the lesson of humility is learned." Winegrowing at Samsara starts with selecting special sections within each vineyard - typically 3/4 acre. Chad and Mary are looking for soils, altitudes, slopes and elevations that will bring the best out of the vine. With each Samsara vineyard section, it is critical that they "have a voice" in how the vines are managed.

As there is a direct, inverse relationship between the quantity of grapes a vine produces and their quality, all of the Samsara sections are purchased by the acre - Samsara pays the same price no matter how little fruit is produced.

Because of the tiny size of vineyard selections where grapes for Samsara wines are grown, each wine is produced in very small quantities - typically 75 to 100 cases - and sells out very quickly upon release. The aim is to have "healthy vines in extreme conditions" which begins with soil management to ensure the vine has the nutrients and minerals it needs so that, combined with the correct irrigation in springtime, there is vigorous, healthy growth of the vine, producing full can

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
