Ruby Hill Winery history goes way back to 1887 when it was founded by John Crellin. The name came from the fertile soil which was bright red in color and produced award winning wines!Ruby Hill Winery had many owners over the years, consistently producing the finest wines in the region.Today, with the skills and knowledge of our world class winemaker, Chris Graves and that same great soil - we plan to keep up the tradition of Ruby Hill Winery!.
Immediately following graduation, I was employed by Karl Wente as the Enologist for Wente Vineyards. Right away, I began implementing more efficient systems and introduced newer technology into the wine production and quality control departments. I am proficient in most computer systems and programs and therefore became responsible for new protocol in recording, managing and monitoring inventory and quality control information.

Winemaker Chris Graves
Following harvest of 2004, I was promoted to Assistant Winemaker of Wente Vineyards, and shortly thereafter I was offered the position of Winemaker for Tamás Estates. The Livermore Valley has an East-West orientation, which allows for the cool coastal Pacific breezes to both cool, and moderate the climate. This allows for warm California days, and cool nights. Compared to Napa, the Livermore Valley receives less rainfall, which allows for more control with irrigation.
Our philosophy here at the new Ruby Hill Winery is to produce world-class wines of the highest caliber from the beautiful Livermore Valley and surrounding California coastal regions. Our wines are typically designed to be rich, yet approachable, with good balance between fruit, oak, acidity and tannins. Zinfandel and Petite Sirah are our specialties, but we are also very passionate about Italian varietal's such as Sangiovese and Barbera. In general, we work with typical French, Italian and Spanish varietal's.

Natalie MacLean writes about wine with a sensuous obsession... and often laugh-out-loud funny... Terrific.

Rex Pickett, Sideways

Ms. MacLean is the disarming Everywoman. She loves wine, loves drinking ... ultimately, it's a winning formula.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
