That's David Craw, he's the guy who started Motts Landing Vineyard. He had a vision (admittedly, most entrepreneurs had 'a vision' but David's was different because he also had a shovel, thus differentiating himself from most entrepreneurs). David quickly discovered that a shovel wasn't quite enough to start a vineyard so he bought a Kubota (a tractor, for those of you who rarely get outside the city limits). David soon realized that owning a vineyard was a lot of work, so he found a girlfriend. Okay, okay...it wasn't like that. Finding a girlfriend had nothing to do with building up the farm labour pool (wink, wink).

David's partner, Sonia Carpenter (pictured on the left), quickly became the winemaker (the smart one) and David concentrated on growing the grapes. They are the heart and soul of Motts Landing Vineyard. They haven't come this far on their own, they've had many hands helping them along the way. Friends and family have done much to ensure their success (these people expect free wine for life, David's offering them a 10% 'family' discount...negotiations are on-going).

So maybe you want to learn more about David, Sonia and Motts Landing Vineyard?? Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
