Richard is a veteran winemaker of twenty eight vintages. He received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Oregon, apprenticed for three years with a Master Winemaker in Germany and went on to receive his Master’s degrees in both Viticulture and Enology from Germany’s famed institute of winemaking in Geisenheim. Following graduation, he returned to Oregon and founded a winery, Callahan Ridge Winery, which became the states sixth largest. In 1995, he married Leslie Whipple and moved to California to become a leading consultant and winemaker in the Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino Valleys. In 2000, he and Leslie embarked on building their dream winery in the Napa Valley and now are proud to offer the fruits of their work.

Leslie is a graduate of the Ecole Ritz Escoffier at the Hotel Ritz in Paris, France, graduating with honors in both Cuisine and Patisserie, and is a certified Master Food Preserver from Oregon State University.

Richard brings the European tradition of meso-vinification to his style of winemaking. He walks every row of the vineyards during harvest and custom tailors his picking to choose only those grapes that are perfectly ripe and ready for the fermentation vats. Instead of large tanks with uniform wines, he shepherds carefully selected individual small lots through fermentation and barrel aging. Meso-vinification refers to the development of many small amounts of wine, from one barrel to twenty barrels, until, at the final blending the finest are selected to become the wine which bears his name.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
